The Layham Events Group (LEG) was formed several years ago when some likeminded friends wanted to raise funds for local causes and further unite the communities of Upper and Lower Layham.
We achieve these aims by organising events such as fairs and fun days that will appeal to a variety of interests and age groups. Community support is essential - LEG consists of a small group of volunteers, but our success depends on a whole army of volunteers - so pleae let us know if you would like to volunteer at future events. Local businesses and many individuals have given generously to support raffles, tombola and prize giving.
The Parish Council and Babergh District Council have also given essential financial support, for which we are grateful.
Some of the local causes we have supported to date include Layham Village Hall, Layham Local History Group and St Andrew’s Church.
Events to date have included a very successful Platinum Jubilee Fete (see the Jubilee Fete page) and several rounders matches, the most recent being part of the VE Day celebrations in May 2025. There was strong competition between the two teams – ‘Layham on the Water’ captained by Ed Hall, and ‘The Young Ones’ captained by James Andrews, who eventually won. Ably refereed by David Aplin, it was a well fought final match. The atmosphere of the 1940s was created by Brian Hempstead who played several hits on the organ, and the Wesley Ukulele Band who played some wartime tunes. LEG has organised five Festive Fairs, the latest taking place on Saturday 6 December 2025. The Village Hall was filled with early Christmas shoppers looking for unique gifts. Local crafts including pens, turned wooden crafts, preserves, cakes, original art, Christmas decorations, and photographic gifts were snapped up. Many took chances on the raffle, tombola, water to wine and - of course - guess the weight of the Christmas cake. Children and parents were drawn by books and jig-saws as well as the soft toy lucky dip.
The event raised over £750 for local causes and we would like to thank the many who volunteered or contributed prizes. Special thanks also to The Queen’s Head and The Marquis for their continued generosity and support.
